Fun fact: Did you know that the word karaoke comes from Japanese and literally means “empty orchestra” (空 kara = empty, オケ oke = abbreviation for orchestra)?
The idea originated in the 1970s when a Japanese musician, Daisuke Inoue, invented the first karaoke machine to help his bar's customers sing without needing a live band.
Ironically, he never patented his invention and therefore never received any royalties, despite the immense worldwide success of karaoke!
